Are you a graduate searching for practical experience in the public sector? The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) is offering its 2026 internship program, designed to equip unemployed South African youth with valuable skills and real-world government exposure. This two-year program runs from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2028, helping participants grow professionally while contributing to the country’s economic development.


Overview of the Program

The dtic internship initiative is aimed at graduates who want to gain hands-on experience. Based in Sunnyside, Pretoria, interns will be introduced to government operations and administrative systems. The program is structured to improve employability, whether in public service or the private sector.

The deadline for applications is May 6, 2026, so early preparation is essential.


Monthly Allowance

Participants will receive a monthly stipend of R7,860.50. The exact amount may vary depending on your level of qualification at the time of appointment. This allowance is intended to assist with basic living expenses during the internship.


Fields of Study Accepted

Applicants must hold a qualification at NQF Level 6 or above in a relevant field, including:

  • Public Management or Administration
  • Business Management or Administration
  • Human Resource Management or Development
  • Communication or Public Relations
  • Law
  • Software Development
  • Economics
  • Statistics or Econometrics
  • Agricultural Economics or Forestry
  • Development Studies
  • Accounting or Financial Management
  • Risk Management
  • Auditing or Internal Auditing
  • Natural Sciences (e.g., Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bioengineering)
  • Mining Engineering or Metallurgy
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Supply Chain Management or Procurement
  • International Relations or Politics

Choosing a field that aligns with your qualification will improve your chances of selection.


Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the internship, candidates must:

  • Be unemployed South African graduates
  • Hold a qualification at NQF Level 6 or higher
  • Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Show professionalism and ethical conduct
  • Have analytical thinking and attention to detail
  • Be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Be willing to learn and adapt to government processes
