The Spanish side took the lead in the 22nd minute through captain Mikel Oyarzabal, who calmly converted a penalty after teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was brought down inside the box by French defender Lucas Digne.
Yamal continued to cause problems for France’s defence throughout the match, showcasing his exceptional talent and creativity. Spain doubled their advantage in the 58th minute when Pedro Porro finished off a brilliant attacking move following a well-executed combination with Dani Olmo.
The young Spanish star thought he had added another goal to his name, but the effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR review confirmed the decision.
The victory sends Spain into their first World Cup final since their historic triumph in 2010, when they lifted the trophy for the first time in the nation’s history.
Spain will now face the winner of the second semi-final between defending champions Argentina and England, who are set to battle for a place in the final in Atlanta on Wednesday.
For France, their hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final have come to an end. Kylian Mbappé and his teammates will now compete for a third-place finish against the losing side from the other semi-final.
The result also marks Spain’s third consecutive major tournament semi-final victory over France, following their success against Les Bleus in Euro 2024 and the UEFA Nations League the following year.
