FIFA Rejects Proposal for Italy to Replace Iran in 2026 World Cup

The world football governing body, FIFA, has dismissed a proposal suggesting that Italy should replace Iran in the 2026 FIFA World Cup following growing political tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. The idea was reportedly put forward by U.S. special envoy Paolo Zampolli, who argued that Italy could take Iran’s place due to the ongoing geopolitical situation.

However, the proposal was quickly rejected by Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi and Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti. Both officials emphasized that qualification for the World Cup must be earned on the pitch through sporting merit rather than political or administrative decisions.

FIFA has not issued a detailed statement on the proposal, but it has made its position clear by reaffirming that there is no justification for replacing teams that have already qualified. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has also reiterated that FIFA World Cup 2026 participants, including Iran, will compete without any changes or uncertainty.

Four-time World Cup winners Italy will miss the tournament for a third consecutive time after failing to qualify, following their playoff defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina last month.
